COURSE TITLE: Acting 1

MEETING TIME/DAYS: 12:30 - 1:45 PM, Tuesday & Thursdays

Course Description

Introduce the student to the basic imaginative, physical and vocal skills necessary
for acting. To develop in the student a beginning rehearsal approach to scripted scenes. To develop an understanding of the cooperative nature of acting.

Course Outcomes

  1. Ability to define fundamental acting terms and principles
  2. Ability to apply the fundamental acting process to performance
  3. Ability to demonstrate a structured rehearsal process
  4. Ability to identify and utilize imaginative and unique choices in performance

Instructional Methodologies

(e.g. lecture, audio visuals, small group discussions, quizzes, etc.)

There are multiple instructional methodologies used in this course, including lectures, audio/visuals, small group discussions, peer observations, quizzes, etc. There is one required text, listed below. Any other assigned readings, videos, or quizzes will be posted on Canvas. 

Memorization: An actor is required to memorize text as part of their job. This course builds memorization skills by requiring the student to memorize text from a script for many of the assignments.

Required Materials

1. Actors Journal to bring to every class period
2. “Play the Scene” by Michael Schulman and Eva Mekler
3. Pencil for marking scripts

Attendance Policy

Attendance is extremely important to your success in this class and attendance directly affects your participation grade.
  • Your overall grade may be reduced by 1 letter grade after 2 unexcused absences.
  • Performance/Presentation Days
    • An unexcused absence on Performance/Presentation days will result in the reduction of 1 letter grade for the Performance/Presentation
    • You will be expected to do your Performance/Presentation during the next scheduled class day.
    • A letter grade will be deducted each day (up to 2 more times) until either you complete your Performance/Presentation or your highest potential grade for the assignment has been reduced to a "D"
