Course Description:

Upon completion of the 256-hour Patient Care Technician Program, students will meet the requirements to take the PCT, Phlebotomy and EKG technician certification exams through National Healthcareer Association and be prepared to challenge the CNA licensing exam.  You will receive a certificate of successful completion for each program section (EKG, Phlebotomy, PCT/CNA). You could end up receiving FOUR certifications! (Additional Phlebotomy, EKG, CNA exam, study guide and practice test fees paid separately.)

PCT/CNA Training

Description- The 124-hour PCT/CNA portion of the PCT program provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform basic care services for a patient (acute care setting) or resident (long-term care setting) or an individual in a home health setting. It prepares the student to function in the role of nursing assistant under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN).  The 124-hour course includes 84 hours of lecture and skills training with the option to attend 40 hours of clinical experience in a hospital or nursing home ($200 separate fee).  Completers will be able to challenge the CNA licensing exam in the state of Florida and work as a Home Health Aide in any Medicare approved center.

EKG Technician Training

Description- This 40-hour traiing portion of the PCT program provids the training for administering and reading EKGs.  The course includes anatomy and physiology and disease processes that affect the heart, medications, Holter monitoring, 12-lead EKG, analyzing EKG readings, and much more. 

Phlebotomy Training

Description:  The 84-hour phlebotomy training portion of the PCT program is designed to provide didactic and skills training in venipuncture and lab specimen collection. Didactic lectures cover the theory, anatomy, and terminology pertaining to the cardiovascular system. Clinical lab instruction provides hands-on training in venipuncture techniques and lab specimen collections following procedures verified using a skills check-off system.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have performed at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on a live person to qualify for the National Healthcareer Association’s national certification exam in as a Phlebotomy Technician. 

Requirements for Optional 40 Hours Clinical Training Experience ONLY (separate $200 registration fee after class starts):  

Background Check- A level 2 background check will be conducted through Hillsborough Community College.  Students with felonies, especially those related to child or elder abuse are not allowed to participate in the clinical rotation.  Visit the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) to see if you are eligible to work in healthcare if you have criminal a history. Person’s with criminal history may be able to obtain and exemption from AHCA to provide eligibility for employment in a healthcare setting.  A failed background check will make you ineligible for the optional clinical experience but will not prevent you from completing the class.  

Drug Screening- Students are required to have a 10-panel drug screen.  If the urine screen is positive, the student will receive a call from the medical review officer at the testing center asking you to provide documentation of prescriptive medication.  If proper documentation cannot be provided, the failed drug screen will make you ineligible for the optional clinical experience but will not prevent you from completing the class.   NOTE: Healthcare facilities will not allow students or employees to use marijuana, even with state medical approval for marijuana use.  Any positive marijuana drug screen result, regardless of medical approval for use, will prevent you from attending the optional clinical experience.

Physical Exam/Immunizations
Students must get a medical physical exam including a 2-stage TB skin test and must provide proof that all immunizations are up to date including:  Influenza, COVID-19 Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chickenpox, Hepatitis B, TDAP.  If the student has a medical issue that can affect their participation in the program, they should advise HCC immediately.  We do not recommend taking classes that include phlebotomy/specimen collection and if you are pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant due to exposure risk.  Your physician must complete and sign the Students Health and Immunization Certification Forms.  All exams, tests and vaccines are required unless you have a medical or religious exemption.  Your healthcare provider will need to complete required HCC forms available to you once your register.

Helpful hints:

·         Your High School should have your immunization records if you have graduated within the past 3 years.

·         Your primary care doctor may have copies of your immunizations.

·         Physicals and immunizations are free in many health insurance plans including Medicaid and may be completed with your primary care doctor.
